Atalaya Castle’s History

Atalaya Castle, located in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, was constructed between 1931 and 1933 by philanthropist Archer Huntington and his wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, as a winter residence.

Designed by Archer himself in a unique blend of Spanish and Moorish architectural styles, the castle features thirty rooms arranged around a central courtyard, with a forty-foot water tower at its heart.

Built by local laborers during the Great Depression to support the regional economy, the estate also included animal enclosures and art studios, and later became part of Huntington Beach State Park, preserving its rich history and cultural significance.
